The Master of Applied Cybernetics is a one-year full-time graduate program focused on understanding and managing complex cybernetic and cyber-physical systems. It links technology with human, regulatory, social and environmental contexts, and includes opportunities for applied research and professionally relevant experience. The program is delivered in person through ANU’s College of Systems and Society and develops advanced interdisciplinary capability in applied cybernetics at master’s level.

Students develop advanced capability to frame and interrogate cybernetic problems, understand machine–human system dynamics, and apply critical thinking to complex integrated systems. The program builds practical skills in cybernetics practice and the design of cyber-physical systems, alongside an intellectual framework that connects technical decisions with governance, ethics and real-world constraints. Learning is supported by project-based work and an applied experience component in master’s-level cybernetics.

Graduates may pursue roles designing, analysing or governing complex socio-technical systems across technology, policy and research environments. Career directions can include cyber-physical systems specialist, systems designer, applied cybernetics practitioner, innovation or strategy roles, responsible technology and governance roles, and research or consulting positions in interdisciplinary teams. The degree supports work in sectors such as technology, government, critical infrastructure, startups and research organisations in applied cybernetics.

Admission is via a competitive two-stage selection process. Applicants submit a cover letter addressing selection criteria (leadership outputs, cross-disciplinary communication, flexibility, resilience, collaboration), a portfolio piece, and a CV plus employer statement or referees. Shortlisted candidates attend an interview. Assumed background includes a Bachelor degree (often honours) with GPA 5/7, or equivalent with relevant work experience; alternatively GMAT/GRE with substantial experience, or extensive senior experience.
