The Graduate Diploma in Asian Law provides specialised study for lawyers and other professionals engaging with Asian legal systems in commercial, legal and policy contexts, as well as for researchers focused on Asia. Students study a diverse range of subjects taught by staff with language capability and practical experience in Asian jurisdictions, and gain exposure to how laws, institutions and reforms shape cross-border interactions. The program is part of the Melbourne Law Masters and offers links to the Asian Law Centre and the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society.

Students develop deeper knowledge of major Asian legal systems and the social, institutional and regulatory contexts in which they operate. The course builds the ability to analyse legal institutions, reform trajectories and legal practice across jurisdictions, supporting informed decision-making in cross-border matters. It also strengthens capability to engage with Asian legal issues in professional, policy and research settings.

Graduates may pursue or advance careers in legal practice, corporate and commercial advisory roles, government and regulatory agencies, and policy or international engagement roles involving Asia-focused matters. The program supports work in areas such as cross-border transactions, compliance, governance, international development, and risk and regulatory strategy. It is also relevant preparation for research-oriented roles in academia, think tanks, or specialist legal and policy centres focused on Asia.
