This graduate certificate introduces national security concepts and practical policy skills for professionals working with security issues. It focuses on understanding and navigating Australia’s security landscape while examining major regional and global challenges. Students engage with contemporary risks including terrorism, cyber threats, pandemics and climate change, and learn from a network connected to the National Security College, a joint initiative of ANU and the Australian Government.

You will build foundational knowledge of national security policymaking, concepts and methods, and how security institutions operate. The program develops practical capabilities in analysing risk, resilience and crisis response, and applying ethical, legal and strategic perspectives to policy problems. Electives allow you to tailor learning toward emerging technologies, geopolitics, climate and environmental security, and other current and future security challenges.

Graduates are suited to roles that support security policy and practice across government and related sectors. Potential pathways include policy officer/analyst roles in national security, defence, intelligence-adjacent agencies, foreign affairs, emergency management, and cyber or critical infrastructure policy. The qualification can also support progression for professionals in consulting, NGOs, and regulated industries who work on risk management, resilience, and security governance.

Applicants need a recognised bachelor degree (or graduate diploma/certificate) with at least GPA 4/7, or completion of 24 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. Admission may also be based on either: GRE (within 5 years) with minimum 155 Verbal, 155 Quantitative and 4.0 Analytical Writing plus 3 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 experience; or 5 years relevant full-time ANZSCO Skill Level 1 work experience. English requirements also apply.
