This graduate certificate develops specialised critical care nursing capability for the emergency department, focusing on assessment, prioritisation and management of patients presenting with undifferentiated illness or injury. It is delivered in a flexible mixed mode with a work-integrated learning model that emphasises supervised clinical practice. Students build evidence-based, scientifically informed approaches to caring for patients with complex and rapidly changing needs.

The course aims to build a sound understanding of core concepts in acute illness, disease and trauma relevant to emergency critical care nursing. Students develop advanced clinical decision-making, problem-solving and communication skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in high-pressure environments. Graduates strengthen their ability to practise safely and effectively within inter-professional teams using current evidence and scientific advances.

Graduates are prepared to progress in emergency department nursing roles requiring specialist critical care knowledge and skills. The qualification supports practice in fast-paced acute care settings where nurses manage critically ill or injured patients and coordinate care within multidisciplinary teams. It may also provide a pathway to further postgraduate study in advanced nursing practice or related critical care specialisations.

Currently practicing registered nurses working in an emergency department setting who are interested in specialising in emergency nursing. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
