This mining major, offered within Curtin’s Bachelor of Science, builds foundations in mining engineering and geoscience for the safe and economic extraction of minerals. You’ll study mining methods, rock mechanics, geology and mine planning, with opportunities for field trips and industry engagement. Study begins in Perth and culminates in Kalgoorlie, close to Western Australia’s mining operations, as part of an undergraduate mining discipline. The programme develops laboratory techniques, scientific writing, and analytical methods for research and industry settings.

Graduates can pursue careers supporting underground and open-pit operations across mining and energy resources, including emerging critical minerals and rare earths. Typical roles include mining engineer, mine manager, engineering consultant, mine ventilation consultant and mining company consultant. The major is recognised by AusIMM and meets education requirements relevant to WA mine supervisor and quarry manager certification pathways, as an undergraduate mining discipline. Preparing graduates for laboratory technician, research assistant, and science-based industry entry roles.
