This honours specialisation in Interactive Composition supports students working with contemporary, commercially oriented music-making that integrates sound with other media. It emphasises creative practice in contexts such as screen media, interactive and digital platforms, and interdisciplinary performance/production. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate capability through a folio of original works and a project proposal outlining a major creative research direction.

Students develop advanced creative and technical skills in composing and producing music and sound for/with other media, supported by critical framing of their practice. The specialisation aims to strengthen compositional craft, originality, and the ability to articulate creative intent through a research-informed project proposal. It also builds readiness for honours-level independent work through curated folio development and, where required, interview-based assessment.

Graduates may pursue roles composing and producing music and sound for film, animation, games, interactive media, theatre, and digital content. The specialisation can support careers as an interactive/media composer, sound designer, electronic music artist, or creative practitioner working across interdisciplinary production environments. It also provides preparation for further study or research-led creative practice pathways in music and sound with other media.

Start Year 2027. Applications open 3 August and close 31 October. All applicants must meet the standard eligibility for the Bachelor of Music (Degree with Honours), in addition to the following: For graduates of external institutions or University of Melbourne students who do not have a result of at least H2A (75%) in Interactive Composition 6 (MUSI30230), a 30-minute interview is required, including presentation of a 15-minute Interactive Composition folio and a research project proposal. For University of Melbourne Bachelor of Music students with a result of at least H2A (75%) in Interactive Composition 6 (MUSI30230), an interview and folio are not required. All applicants must submit a direct University application and a supplementary application. Supplementary application requirements: submit a research proposal (250–350 words) and an Interactive Composition folio via the supplementary application. Folio: upload no more than 15 minutes total comprising 2–3 recent original sound works (or sections) for/with other media (e.g., film, animation, gaming, interactive media, theatre, visual art, lighting design). Where appropriate, include a notated music score of at least one original work. The folio is evaluated on compositional craft, creativity, and suitability for Interactive Composition at Honours level.
