This honours specialisation in Design and Production focuses on advanced practice and research in technical production for performance. It supports applicants developing a defined research proposal alongside a creative portfolio that demonstrates their capability in design and/or production. Selection is competitive and includes assessment of a proposal and portfolio, with shortlisted applicants progressing to an interview.

The specialisation builds advanced skills in communicating creative ideas, evidencing practice through a curated portfolio, and engaging critically with resources and supervision to support an honours-level project. It also strengthens professional presentation and interview skills aligned to full-time study expectations.

Graduates may pursue roles across live performance and creative industries where advanced design/production capability is required. Potential pathways include technical production for theatre and events, design and making roles, and production management or coordination in performance settings. The honours focus can also support progression into further research or specialist practice-based work in performance production.

For entry into the specialisation, all applicants must meet the standard eligibility for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Degree with Honours), in addition to the requirements below. Entry is based on a written proposal, portfolio, and an interview for shortlisted applicants only. Applicants must upload the written proposal and portfolio via the supplementary application. Written proposal: a 700–1000 word statement outlining the proposed research and a summary of relevant experience. Portfolio: samples of recent creative work supporting the application and proposal (e.g., designs, photos, drawings, images, illustrations, artwork and/or video up to 15 minutes); items must be clearly labelled with title, date, medium and dimensions/duration; videos over 250MB may be provided via YouTube/Vimeo link (not password protected). Shortlisted applicants must attend an online interview (approximately 30 minutes via Zoom) to discuss the proposal, motivations, and ability to commit to full-time study. Applicants are ranked against criteria including relevance/currency of topic, resources and supervision availability, originality/skill/experience evidenced in the portfolio, and interview performance. The Design and Production specialisation will not be offering a 2027 intake.
