The Bachelor of Asian Studies prepares students to engage deeply with Asia through combined language study and disciplinary or area-focused learning. It builds cultural and historical understanding of the region and its diverse societies, supporting students from any academic background. You’ll study with a globally recognised Asia and Pacific specialist college and develop cross-cultural capability relevant to Australia’s strategic engagement with Asia.

Students develop proficiency in an Asian language alongside regionally grounded knowledge in areas such as politics, security, history, culture and society. The program emphasises critical thinking, independent research and communication across cultures, supported by experiential learning. Transdisciplinary problem-solving courses help students frame and address complex regional and global challenges using evidence, context and creative analytical approaches.

Graduates are suited to roles requiring Asia expertise and strong language and intercultural skills. Career paths can include government and diplomacy, security and policy analysis, international development, business and trade, media and communications, education, and research. The degree supports work with organisations operating in or with the Asia-Pacific region where regional knowledge, cultural literacy and stakeholder communication are essential.

Entry is based on an indicative ATAR of 80 (or IB 30) for undergraduate admission. Applicants must meet ANU eligibility and application requirements relevant to their background, and may be able to use adjustment factors where available. Selection is competitive and subject to meeting any additional university admission conditions at the time of application.
